Advertising online can take many different forms.

Advertising can be text adverts (either within search results pages on Google or Bing, for example) or shown on third-party websites.  They could also be image or video (display) advertisements, pop-ups, page or site sponsorship.

Ads shown on third-party sites can be triggered by searches or website visits elsewhere (cookies track such things and, if permissions allow, this data is shared amongst advertising networks) to target very specific demographics and individuals.
