eCommerce

About › eCommerce

Wikipedia describes eCommerce as ‘the activity of electronically buying or selling of products on online services or over the Internet.’ In other words, if you’re selling something on the web, you’re engaged in eCommerce.

There are many reasons you might want to do this.  You may have an existing retail location and want to widen your potential market from local to global.   In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this might even have become a necessity.

Or you might be a new business with a warehouse / backroom full of stock and ideas for a new website.

Perhaps you just want a piece of a multi-trillion-dollar pie!

Whatever your reasons for wanting to take your business online, there are a number of approaches you might take.

You might use an existing and well-established marketplace such as Amazon, eBay or Etsy, where you set up a storefront and pay fees on any sales you make.

You might choose to develop a standalone website built on the back of an existing system such as Shopify or Magento.

Or you might have an existing website, perhaps built using a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress, onto which you could add eCommerce functionality through the use of plugins such as WooCommerce.
